GEMS Education Center
Manduca Girl

The Science and Mathematics Education Center at the University of Arizona was established as a GEMS Education Center in April 2003. GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) is a nationally recognized resource for professional development. Across the country GEMS is providing support for teachers presenting GEMS units and implementing activity-based, inquiry-driven science and mathematics education. Developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) and tested in thousands of classrooms nationwide, over 78 GEMS Teacher's Guides and Handbooks offer a wide spectrum of learning opportunities for students from preschool and kindergarten through eighth grade. The National GEMS Center enthusiastically supports and is committed to the University of Arizona's GEMS Center. The goal of the Science and Mathematics Education Center is to provide new teachers with high quality, classroom ready, curriculum materials and establish a network of teachers who lead professional development programs with the materials through its southern Arizona GEMS Education Center.

The SAMEC GEMS Education Center was funded by the Arizona Teacher Excellence Coalition (AzTEC) and co-sponsored by the Science and Mathematics Education Center, National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and Central Arizona College/SEMAA (Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy).
