  • "Seeing the World Through the Many Eyes of Optics"
    August 27, 2005


    Educators are invited to a special event put on by the Optical Society of America, Thursday, October 20th, 4:00- 9:00 p.m., at the El Conquistador Resort, in Tucson.Ê If you can make it, this event is not to be missed. At 4 p.m., there is an incredible talk by Dr. Sara Armstrong for teachers and optics professionals alike on technology and optics in the classroom. Sara is from the George Lucas Educational Foundation. Then there will be a Mexican buffet dinner, followed at 6:30 p.m. with tabletop demonstrations on optics education for the classroom. And there will be giveaways for teachers, if they pre-register. The entire evening's events are free to teachers. For further details, see the attached brochure. Preregistration is highly recommended (to secure your spot) for this special event and virtually painless. The deadline to sign-up is Monday, October 3, 2005.   • Hands On Optics Teacher Training

    Hands On Optics (HOO) is a collaboration between the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the Optical Society of America, and the International Society of Optical Engineering. Hands On Optics consists of a series of six modules that cover different areas of optics. Teachers will receive training in each of the six modules over a two-year period. The teacher will be paired with an Optics Resource Volunteer (ORV). Pairing a professional educator with a professional scientist leads to a rich experience for students in the program.   • Chemistry in the Toy Store

    The Department of Chemistry of Pima Community College and the Southern Arizona Section of the American Chemical Society in celebration of National Chemistry Week (October 16-22, 2005) present "Chemistry in the Toy Store?Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, Dry Ice Root Beer," Saturday, October 22, 2005, Pima Community College West Campus (Proscenium Theatre), 2202 W. Anklam Road, Tucson, AZ. Dr. David Katz will present a free public demonstration for families and kids of all ages. There will be plenty of free parking and free refreshments will be available after the program.
