  • Deep Impact: The First Look Inside a Comet
    After 172 days and 431 million kilometers (268 million miles) of deep space stalking, Deep Impact successfully reached out and touched comet TempelÊ1. The collision between the coffee table-sized impactor and city-sized comet occurred at 1:52 a.m. EDT. Scientists hope to learn a lot from the small comet, which is only about 8.7 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. Professor H. Jay Melosh will talk on "First Results from the Deep Impact Mission" in Tucson on Saturday, July 9. His talk will begin at 6:15 p.m. in the Kuiper Space Sciences Building, 1629 E. University Blvd., Tucson. This free lecture is sponsored by UA's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Public Outreach Program and is part of the Science Teacher's Colloquium Series.

Research Assistant - The individual will work with Indian education issues and other projects. Responsibilities will include: Coordinate and conduct research and analysis to support projects. Accumulate data from various sources including electronic databases and other electronic sources, interviews, site-visits, and other methods.   • Systems Thinking in Earth Science: Sustainability of Semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas
    Attention pre-service and beginning science teachers of grades 5-8. Join our Program in systems thinking, science content, and teaching strategies. Participants meet weekly. During the fall, you will build understanding of systems thinking tools embedded in science content. Participants then try activities in the classroom and reflect on student learning. Experienced teachers offer support, coaching and resources. Some classes will be science-related field trips. We will meet two dates in April TBD by participants and instructors. Teachers with or without existing systems thinking training are welcome. Sessions are designed for learners with diverse experiences and prior knowledge. No math background required! Mondays, October 10 to December 12, 2005 (no class 10/31) & January 9-April 30, 2006 (no class 1/16, 3/13, 3/20), from 4:00-6:45 pm. Location: Koffler (formerly CBS) Bldg. Room 411, University of Arizona, Main Campus, Tucson. Benefits include: Stipend of $600 for full participation & $100 worth of classroom materials, Optional 4 undergraduate or graduate credits through the University of Arizona with registration fees waived (fees of ~$60 to be paid by participant).
