SOLiD? System - Sequencing by Olignucleotide by Ligation (SBL) and Detection
GATC and HOGL Sponsored Seminar
When: October 22nd, 2007, 10:00AM - 11:30AM
Where: THOMAS W. KEATING BIORESEARCH BUILDING #103
Speaker: Janine McMurdie, M.S., SOLiD Applications Consultant

The SOLiD? System, based on sequencing by oligonucleotide ligation and detection, is Applied Biosystems? next-generation system for ultra high-throughput DNA analysis. Unlike polymerase sequencing approaches, the SOLiD? System utilizes a proprietary technology called stepwise ligation, which generates high quality data for applications such as whole genome sequencing, medical sequencing, genotyping, gene expression and small RNA discovery.
A summary of next generation DNA sequencing chemistry and instrumentation that can generate greater than 3 GigaBases of data/run with greater than 99.9% raw accuracy at significant cost efficiency. Includes a discussion of the broad array of applications that are enabled on the platform.

Junior Scientists Need You!
The UA Libraries' Science-Engineering Team is looking for UA faculty, staff and students to be involved in the 5th Annual Junior Scientists Kids' Day at the Science-Engineering Library on Homecoming Saturday, November 3, 2007. This free event features interactive educational science exploration for kids. The first four years of this program, which started at Homecoming in 2003, have been highly successful with hundreds of children (ages 2-14) and their parents/families/friends enjoying the fun while learning more about science and engineering!
PRESENT A DEMONSTRATION/ACTIVITY
If your Department/Club/Educational Outreach Program has any fun science/math/engineering-related experiments or demonstrations for kids, then please go to our website at: http://www.library.arizona.edu/events/jrscientists and fill out the *UA Department/Club Presenter Form at: http://www.library.arizona.edu/events/jrscientists/presenters.html and click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the form on the website. We will contact you upon receipt of this form. NASA's ISS EarthKam and Mars Student Imaging Projects and Activities For Your classroom
The NASA Educator Resource Center (ERC) will host Saturday workshops for teachers throughout the school year. The first one will take place on Saturday, October 13th from 9:30-11:30 at the ERC in Prescott and will include information on using NASA's ISS EarthKam and Mars Student Imaging projects and activities in your classroom. ISS EarthKAM is a NASA sponsored program that provides stunning, high quality photographs of our planet taken from the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Participating students can take photographs of Earth by using the internet to direct a digital camera on select space flights and currently on the International Space Station. Those images can then be used to enhance learning and address standards in science, geography, mathematics, and technology. Iss EarthKAM: investigating Earth from the unique perspective of space. Mars Student Imaging Project is an opportunity for students to be involved in authentic Mars research. Teams of students in grades 5 through college sophomore level will have the opportunity to work with scientists, mission planners and educators on the THEMIS team, to image a site on Mars using the THEMIS visible wavelength camera onboard the Mars Odyssey spacecraft which is currently orbiting Mars every 2 hours. Let your students explore Mars... for REAL! Please reply with your intent to attend. Carpooling is encouraged. Directions and a campus map can be found at: http://www.erau.edu/pr/tours/index.html
Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there! Stacy DeVeau Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University NASA Educator Resource Center 3700 Willow Creek Road - Bldg. 70C Prescott, AZ 86301 Tel: 928-777-6281 Email: deveaus@erau.edu Fax: 928-777-6693 http://www.erau.edu/pr/erc

Enroll High School Classes in The People Speak Global Debate
There is still time for high schools in your state to participate in The People Speak Global Debate. Participating schools will hold a public debate on the best way to lower carbon emissions and organize a vote of the students in the audience. World leaders focused on climate change this week at the United Nations and President Bush is convening his own climate change meeting with business leaders. Everyone is talking about this and now students can too!
Students will learn about one of the most important global issues of their lifetime – how to deal with our changing climate as well as sharpening their public speaking and research skills. If that wasn’t enough, all participating schools are eligible to compete to send their four-student debate team and two educators to a Youth Leadership Summit at the United Nations next summer.
We have over 400 schools from 45 U.S. states and 52 countries participating!
The first step is for interested teachers or students to register online. All debates should occur during the 10-day period of October 12-22. Schools will need to be registered before their debate. We will send a toolkit with all the information needed to plan a successful Global Debate, including debate tips, links to resources and research on the topic and more. Schools can register online today at: http://globaldebates.thepeoplespeak.org
If you have any questions, please contact Victoria at vbaxter@unfoundation.org or 202-887-9040.

Arizona Exposium on Frontiers in Information Technology and Applications (FITA'08)
The Management Information Systems Department at the Eller College would like to announce an outreach conference to be held on February 29 and March 1, 2008. The formal name of the event is the Arizona Exposium on Frontiers in Information Technology and Applications (FITA'08), as described at http://fita2008.ecom.arizona.edu.
This event will provide a forum for business leaders, faculty, and students to exchange ideas on new IT problems and solutions, particularly in such frontier areas as service-oriented computing, business intelligence, security, online marketing, collaboration technologies, etc. This event is not a conventional academic conference because it is designed to attract a balanced mix of industrialists, academia, and students. We call this event an "exposium" since it is between an expo, which mainly draws people from the industry, and a symposium, which mainly attracts people from academic institutions. That is, Exposium = Expo + Symposium.
Please let your colleagues know about the outreach event; we are actively pursuing faculty and students outside the MIS department to consider participating in the event.
