Project ASTRO Training Workshop 2007

Hosted by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and developed by the Astronomical Society of The Pacific and coordinated in Tucson by NOAO, Project Astro is a unique educational program offers teachers instruction in conducting hands-on inquiry-based science activities in their classrooms plus an astronomer partner with whom to present the activities.  During the two-day ASTRO workshop, a partnership is forged that blends the teacherŐs knowledge of methods and classroom discipline with the astronomerŐs knowledge of and passion for astronomy.  Together the team brings the science of astronomy alive in the classroom when the astronomer makes four school visits during the academic year.  Those activities in turn may serve as springboards into other lessons in math, physics, chemistry, and even writing that may be used to meet various standards.  In the workshops both partners receive Universe At Your Fingertips, a resource book containing seventy-seven lesson plans organized progressively from the solar system to galaxies.  The workshop also includes a trip to Kitt Peak National Observatory for the Nightly Observing Program.

Date:     September 14 and 15, 2007

Place:    U of A Student Union

Time:    Friday, 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM Saturday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Cost: Free

Applications to join the Project ASTRO program are available for teachers at http://www.noao.edu/education/astro/pdf/teacher-app.pdf and for astronomers at http://www.noao.edu/education/astro/pdf/astronomer-app.pdf. The application deadline is September 1, 2007. Completed applications may be faxed to Connie Walker at 520-318-8451 or mailed to her at 950 N. Cherry Ave. For any further questions, feel free to contact Connie at cwalker@noao.edu or 520-318-8535.

Using Technology in the Classroom: It's a WISE Idea

A Free 4-hour Non-Credit Workshop for Teachers  Date: Saturday, October 6, 2007 OR Saturday, October 27, 2007  Time: 9 am to 1 pm  Location: Challenger Middle School Learning Resource Center (LRC) 100 E Elvira Rd, Tucson AZ 85706  Presenter: Vanessa Friedman, M.S. candidate at The University of Arizona Come learn about an exciting and interactive program that will get your students learning in an instant, and having fun while they are doing it. As explained by the WISE website, "Harness the power of the Internet...wisely. WISE is a simple yet powerful learning environment where students examine real-world evidence and analyze current scientific controversies. Our curriculum projects are designed to meet standards and complement your current science curriculum, and your grade 5-12 students will find them exciting and engaging. A web browser is all they need to take notes, discuss theories, and organize their arguments... they can even work from home! Our Teacher Area lets you explore new projects and grade your students' work on the Web. Best of all, everything in WISE is completely free.  During this workshop, you will be able to complete a project, just like your students would, and then practice using the teacher parts of the program. You will leave the workshop with a valuable way to add interaction and technology in to your curriculum. You only need to attend one of the 4-hour sessions to be fully trained in this exciting web based program. It will be 4 hours well spent!  Courtesy of a grant from the Science Foundation Arizona, in-service Arizona science teachers who attend one workshop session will receive a $50 stipend. Each workshop will be limited to a maximum of 16 teachers. To register, please email Ellie Warder at warder@u.arizona.edu or call (520) 621-5903 and indicate which Saturday you prefer.

The University of Arizona Goes to Mars

In August 2007, The University of Arizona, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lockheed Martin and the Canadian Space Agency launch a mission to the Red Planet to find the answers to these and other questions that have tantalized scientists for centuries. "Follow the water" is NASA's theme. The mission will do exactly that, beginning in May 2008 when the lander analyzes a small section of the northern polar ice sheet, looking for a habitable environment. After landing, mission control moves to the UA's Science Operation Center in Tucson. The UA has participated in almost every American planetary mission for half a century and has received more NASA grants for space exploration than any other university in the nation. It is the first public university to lead a mission to Mars. http://mars.arizona.edu/
