The University of Arizona, Kuiper Space Sciences, Room: 308
The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Spring Lecture Series
presents Jonathan Lunine, professor of physics and planetary sciences. SaturnÕs
planet-sized moon, Titan, is a world of lakes, streams, mountains and maybe ice
volcanoes - all revealed by instruments aboard the Cassini Orbiter. This
lecture will focus on radar images that give you a tour of this exotic world
that may have something to teach us about EarthÕs past and future.
This lecture is free to the public. Teacher professional
development certificates will be available at the SAMEC teacher table post
lecture. This lecture series is
sponsored by The University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, the
UA/NASA Space Grant Program, the Space Imagery Center and the Science and
Mathematics Education Center, which provide funding for this program. For

The Edges of Life Lecture Series
The UA's College of Science is proud to present six lectures
that will probe these edges of life. Bringing together perspectives that
include biology, communications, medicine, technology, and philosophy, these
six speakers will help us engage and understand the limits of life, and what
might lie beyond. Lectures are held at Centennial Hall on the campus of the
University of Arizona.
All lectures begin at 7:00 pm and are free to the public.
Call 520-621-4090 for more information. on Wednesday evenings beginning at
7:00- pm, in The University of Arizona Centennial Hall. Teacher professional

M.S. Degree Program in General Biology for Secondary School
Teachers
The University of Arizona offers a summer-oriented graduate
program(with a year-round option) designed specifically for middle and high
school biology teachers. The program's graduate-level courses focus on updating
and expanding your biology content knowledge and expanding your teaching
techniques. Participants have the opportunity to meet and network with other
outstanding teachers and develop lasting relationships with university staff
and faculty. The program is flexible, allowing participants to take classes at
times convenient for them, and several courses are available on-line. Modest
scholarship support is available for in-service Arizona teachers. Applications
for Summer 2008 are due March 1. For more information, visit
<http://biology.arizona.edu/sciconn> or call Ellie Warder at
(520)621-5903.

Instructors: Jim Ware, M.S. and Lisa Rezende, Ph.D.
This course will focus on recent advances in the
understanding of basic biology and on new applications in cellular and
molecular aspects of biology. This online course will begin on Wednesday,
January 16, taking place over 15 weeks. Online assignments will include weekly
discussions, activities, and quizzes, as well as a variety of written
assignments.
Courtesy of the AZ-Start grant funded by Science Foundation
Arizona, in-service Arizona teachers who enroll in this on-line course will
receive a $600 scholarship towards the cost of the course ($1,064.50). You
would be responsible for $464.50 plus a $25 application fee (if necessary). To

A Look at the Learning Cycle Model Using High Technology and
a Little Dirt
A Free 8-Hour Non-Credit Workshop for Teachers
Saturday, January 19, 2008 (Part 1) AND Sunday, January 20,
2008 (Part 2)
8:30 am to 12:30 pm
Biological Sciences West 247, 1041 E Lowell St
The University of Arizona Main Campus in Tucson
Presenter: Brad Donaldson, M.S. candidate at The University
of Arizona
This workshop will begin with a brief hands-on exercise
identifying tracks and wildlife sign in order to introduce (or reacquaint) us
to the 5-ELearning Cycle. The Learning Cycle model promotes inquiry and
exploration as a process for learning science. The remainder of the workshop
will focus on GIS-based instructional modules. This curriculum based on the
Learning Cycle model uses GIS to teach science content (we'll be working on the
Ocean Environment, specifically the unit on marine productivity). Used as an
instructional tool, GIS allows students to see relationships by manipulating
maps, tables and charts. The curriculum, produced by the Saguaro Project,
promotes learning with GIS rather than learning about GIS science. The
computer-based programs allow students with little prior experience with GIS to
explore data sets, understand fundamental science concepts, and engage in
problem solving.

based on the amount of time he/she spends actively engaged in research. An
intern who spends the entire summer (at least 9 weeks, 40hours/week or more) on
his/her research project would receive the maximum award of $9,000. The internship
may be renewed for a second summer.
To participate in the Summer Research Internship program,
you should meet the following requirements:
* Have taken a minimum of 18 units of biology course work at
the undergraduate and/or graduate level
* Be an in-service science/biology teacher Submit your
application online at
<http://www.biochem.arizona.edu/AZ-START/internships.htm>. All
application materials must be received by 5 pm on Monday, March 31, 2008. Late
and incomplete applications will not be considered. If you have questions,

qualified women and minority high-school students into engineering. During the
summer of 2008, the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona (UA)
will offer a Summer Engineering Academy (SEA) to attract qualified high school
students to consider engineering as a career option. The fundamental idea
behind the SEA program is to show prospective engineers exactly how an idea becomes
reality. In this program, student teams will design aerodynamic cars and
devices under the theme of Technology in Service of Society, make models that
will be tested in a specially built wind tunnel. Students will be trained to
use SolidWorksâ„¢, Powder Injection 3-D Printing and for Computer Aided Design
(CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP), respectively. Classroom lectures will cover
topics ranging from Fundamentals of Aerodynamics to Materials used in
Engineering. Prizes will be awarded to best over all designs.
There will be three sessions:
Session I, a residential program for high school freshman
and sophomoresDates : June 8-13 (Orientation for parents, students on Sunday
June 8th)
Session II, a residential program for high school juniors
and seniorsDates: June 15-20 (Orientation for parents, students on Sunday June
15th)
Session III, a residential program for high school juniors
and seniorsDates: June 22-27 (Orientation for parents, students on Sunday June
22nd)
Fees: $450 includes all program materials, room and board.
Need based scholarships will be available on a first come first served basis.
For further information and applications, please contact
Cecilia Gaxiola, 520-621-4018, e-mail: gaxiola@engr.arizona.edu. Applicants may
